An experiment with a hibiscus plant

Jambunists, get yourself a hibiscus plant for this experiment to investigate the effect of bark ringing on the diameter of the branches of plants, won't you? Just take note that the procedure is written in the passive voice and you could pick other woody plant if you so desire. What do you think are the safety precautions for the experiment?

·         Problem statement: What is the effect of barkringing on the diameter of branches?

·         Hypothesis:  Bark ringing will increase the diameter of the branches.

·         Variables:  Manipulated- A branch that is ringed and a branch that is not ringed

                     Fixed-Same hibiscus plant

                     Responding: Diameter of branch

·         Apparatus and materials: Hibiscus plant, Vaseline, water, nutrient, knife, measuring tape

·         Procedure: 1. Two different branches from the same hibiscus are chosen.

                      2. Both branches are labelled as Branch A and Branch B.

3.The plant is left in the sun and enough nutrients and water is given.

                      4. A knife is used to remove a complete ring of bark from Branch A. The

diameter of the branch above the ring is recorded.

                      5. Branch B is not ringed. Its diameter is recorded.

                      6. Vaseline is applied on the exposed tissue.

                      7. After 2 months, the diameter of the branches are measured again.

                      8. The observations are recorded in a table.

·         Data:

 Branches

Initial Diameter of branch/cm

Diameter of branch after 2 months/ cm

Branch A (Ringed)

Branch B (Not ringed)
